ABOUT SURPRISE AZ With an estimate of approximately 109,672 residents in December, 2008, Surprise has been one of the fastest growing municipalities in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area. Real estate developer and state legislator Homer C. Ludden founded the city in 1938 and named it after his hometown of Surprise, Nebraska. The city was subdivided to create an inexpensive housing atmosphere for agricultural workers. Seeing rapid growth over the years, Surprise was incorporated in 1960. EDUCATION IN SURPRISE Schools fall under the Dysert Unified School District. High schools include Valley Vista, Dysert, Shadow Ridge and Willow Canyon High School. There are a number of K-8 grade schools which include Canyon Ridge, Ashton Ranch, Countryside, El Mirage, Riverview, Sunset Hills and others. There are also a number of charter schools in the area. In Arizona, children can attend any school inside or outside the district and children that fall into certain groups, including special education or foster children, are eligible for vouchers to attend private schools. THINGS TO DO IN SURPRISE AZ There’s plenty for you and the family to do in and near Surprise. You don’t have to travel far at all to indulge in the nightlife, enjoy a day at the park, be entertained at a number of attractions, get wet, or have a nice meal. Among an extensive To Do list, nearby attractions include the Cerreta Candy Factory, Bead Museum, Lake Pleasant, White Tank Regional Park and the West Valley Art Museum. Surprise Stadium is the spring training home to the Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers and was voted “best place to watch a spring training game”. Surprise’s Tennis and Racquet Complex was honored with the 2008 Outstanding Facility of the year award by the USTA and has received a number of other awards since opening in 2007. SURPRISE AZ HOMES Property taxes in Surprise are low and homes are modestly priced. Surprise crime rates are low and it is convenient to Phoenix, approximately 20 miles. Surprise will be home to the largest regional shopping center, currently underway, Prasada. The city expects to see $60 million in sales taxes and projects from Prasada and expects to create over 20,000 local jobs.
